Following the events of Cyclone Gabrielle many organisations undertook reviews of how they responded to this event. This included the Government inquiry into the Response to the North Island Severe Weather Events.This inquiry was chaired by Sir Jerry Mateparae GNZM, QSOm KSTJ and from this inquiry there were 14 recommendations which are below
- Put people and their communities at the heart of an integrated emergency management system..
- Utilise the value of the wider government ecosystem.
- Optimise the effort of iwi Māori.
- Invest in NEMA’s primary function.
- Clarify roles in emergency management.
- Increase capability and capacity in emergency management.
- Build a fit-for-purpose National Crisis Management Centre.
- Improve real-time situational awareness.
- Develop a comprehensive warning system.
- Amend the three-day self-sufficiency guidance.
- Restore power and telecommunications early. .
- Formally recognise a wider group of critical infrastructure entities. –
- Bulk up investment in reduction and readiness activities.,
- Update the way response costs are distributed.
